Qatar account holders: mandatory Purpose of Payment code requirements

From 15 June 2019, all domestic Qatari Riyal (QAR) payments in Qatar must include a valid Purpose of Payment code in the appropriate fields for the following payment types:

  • ACH Credit
  • Priority Payments/Customer Transfers
  • Inter-account Transfers

Including a Purpose of Payment code in your payments is a local regulatory requirement in Qatar. This requirement applies for payments submitted on-screen in HSBCnet and via the File Upload service, as well as HSBC Connect and SWIFT transactions.

What this mean for you

As of 15 June 2019, all of your domestic payments in Qatar must have a valid Purpose of Payment code or your payment will be rejected.

Action required by 15 June 2019:

To avoid payment rejections, include a valid Purpose of Payment code in the appropriate fields of your payment instructions as follows:

  • ACH Credit transactions:
    All ACH payments require valid Purpose of Payment codes.
  • Priority Payments/Customer Transfers and Inter-account Transfers:
    All domestic payments, including third-party payments (MT101) and HSBC Inter-account Transfers require a valid Purpose of Payment code.
  • Standing Instructions and Forward-dated payments:
    Standing Instructions and Forward-dated payments in Qatar need to be updated to include valid Purpose of Payment codes.
  • General and Restricted Templates:  
    If you have any domestic payment templates from Qatar debit accounts, we recommend that you update them with valid Purpose of Payment codes.

    Reminder: if you update a Restricted Template, another individual with account permissions must authorise the change in order for the template to be updated.
