Customers with File Upload service: upcoming MEABASIC file format changes

Last updated: 6 March 2017

Effective 9 April 2017, as part of an update to HSBCnet’s File Upload service, several changes will be made to the processing of MEABASIC file formats that may impact your payments.

To avoid rejected payments, we recommend that you review your MEABASIC files to make sure that you are providing payment details within the acceptable character lengths.

> Select here to view the MEASBASIC character length reference table

Please note, payment files uploaded in MEABASIC format must only be from debit accounts in the following countries:

  • Alegria
  • Bahrain
  • Egypt
  • Kuwait
  • Lebanon
  • Oman
  • Qatar
  • United Arab Emirates

Changes for MEABASIC payment files effective 9 April 2017:

  1. Payment instructions that have exceeded the acceptable field lengths (as referenced in the link above) will be rejected along with the “INCORRECT PAYMENT DETAILS LENGTH” message on the File Exception report.
  1. The following fields in Priority Payment instructions will be limited to 32 characters:
    • Beneficiary address, line 3
    • Intermediate bank address, line 3
    • Beneficiary bank address, line 3

This change is to allow provision for upcoming information enhancements for each of the above 3 fields.  Instructions exceeding the available character lengths will be rejected along with the “INCORRECT PAYMENT DETAILS LENGTH” message on the File Exception report.

  1. Intermediary bank address and Beneficiary bank address fields in Priority Payment instructions will be limited to a maximum of 3 lines since instructions with 4 or more lines of information are not supported by SWIFT. Such instructions with 4 or more lines will be rejected along with the “INT/BENE BANK ADDR LINE 4 PRESENT” message on the File Exception report.
