Customers with accounts in Hong Kong: foreign exchange forward contract service enhancements - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What are the reasons for updating the foreign exchange forward contract services on HSBCnet?

These services are being updated as part of our ongoing HSBCnet service review. We trust that the new foreign exchange trading arrangements will help meet your needs and support the efficient delivery of the HSBCnet service.

2. How do I accurately input payment instructions in order to avoid payment delay?

With the new trading arrangement, your fixed foreign exchange forward contract will be settled automatically in the morning of the value date. Should you wish to use the involved foreign currency to submit an outward payment or transfer, please provide us with a separate payment or transfer instruction via HSBCnet.

For example, if you would like to submit a payment in USD to a beneficiary in New York, and you have pre-arranged a fixed foreign exchange forward contract for USD to be exchanged from HKD for this payment:

Before 18 December 2015
If the contract number of the forward contract is in numeric:

  • On the HSBCnet payment screen, please input HKD as the debit currency and USD as the payment currency on the forward contract value date.
  • Under the section 'Exchange contract details' please input the contract number and amount to be settled for this payment.

If the contract number of the forward contract starts with 3 alpha characters:

  • On the forward contract value date, your contract will be automatically settled. The USD (exchanged from HKD per the forward contract) will be credited into your USD settlement account.
  • On the HSBCnet payment screen, please input USD as the debit currency and the payment currency, and debit your USD settlement account for this payment.

After 18 December 2015
For all fixed forward contracts (with both numeric and alpha contract numbers):

  • On the forward contract value date, your contract will be automatically settled. The USD exchanged from HKD per the forward contract will be credited into your USD settlement account.
  • On the HSBCnet payment screen, please input USD as the debit currency and the payment currency, and debit your USD nominated settlement account for this payment.

3. What shall I do if I want to submit payment instructions on HSBCnet using a pre-arranged forward contract for making payments but the nominated settlement account is not available?

Under this scenario, there will be no change in the service offering. While inputting the payment instruction on HSBCnet, please provide the FX contract number when you submit the payment instruction.  Also, please input the debit account as listed in the forward contract as the debit account for the payment.

For example, if you would like to submit a payment in USD to a beneficiary in New York, and you have pre- arranged a fixed foreign exchange forward contract for USD exchanged from HKD for this payment; however, you do not have a USD account:

  • On the HSBCnet payment screen, please input HKD as the debit currency and USD as the payment currency on the forward contract value date.
  • Under the section 'Exchange contract details' please input the contract number and amount to be settled for this payment.
